Our Congregation's History

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them."   Matthew 18:20

The Roosevelt City Church of Christ was organized in 1933 by the late Brother Paul D. English, Sr.  The idea for a Gospel meeting in a location near Bessemer, Alabama, discussed by Brother English, Brother Robert Jones, and Brother Bill Foster.  The meetings were initially held in a hall in the Cairo area and later, in a store across from the hall.  About 300 people were baptized over a nine-week period.

After the congregation was organized, Brother William Mayham, Brother Willis Black, and Brother Charlie Miles were selected to serve as elders.

Brother English was followed by several other ministers and because of them, we have continued to grow in the Lord.

The Congregation moved into a newer building on December 8, 1963 (pictured above).  The congregation continued to grow as God blessed them with faithful and dedicated leaders.  This building is located across the Street from our current building.

On November 17, 2007, we were blessed to see the culmination of many years of vision and planning as we dedicated our new building.  This was accomplished only because of God's goodness and His continual mercy toward us. And so to God be all the glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord as we say, Thank you, God.

Our current Minister is Brother Elijah Anthony.  Our current Elders are Brothers Gary Gibson, John Potts, Sr., and Jerry Toney, Sr.  Our current Deacons are Brothers Anthony Austin, Brian Debrow, Nathan Nelson, and Abraham Ward.

With the help of God and our leadership, we are growing and “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith….”
